Webber to Warriors? Bad Idea
Tuesday, January 29th, 2008The latest reports out of Oakland indicate that the Golden State Warriors are interested in bringing back Chris Webber. Webber, who played his rookie year for the Warriors during the 1993-94 season, is currently an NBA free-agent and has yet to play a game this season.
The last time Webber was in Golden State he clashed with head coach Don Nelson. Nelson, who was brought back to the Warriors last season, has reportedly met with Webber recently and has said that any beef between the two parties has been squashed. Now Nelson is just looking forward to adding Webber to his team.
Said Nelson: “I hope that it happens to be quite honest with you. I think our team needs it.”
The problem is Webber is an absolutely horrible fit for the Warriors. Webber used to be a dynamic power forward with an array of skills. On the Warriors, he’d be a smallish center who would slow down the team. The Warriors are currently the second highest scoring team in the NBA and score by utilizing a run-and-shoot offense. Webber, although he’s still a good passer and has a decent midrange jumper, is painfully slow these days.
Not only would end up slowing down the Warriors, he’d slow down the development of incumbent center Andris Biedrins. Biedrins is a 21-year-old player from Latvia who is one of the better young centers in the NBA. If Webber comes to Golden State, he’ll want to play a healthy amount of minutes – which would take minutes away from the promising Biedrins.
Most damning for Webber is he still thinks he’s a star player. Last year while with the Detroit Pistons, Webber complained about a lack of touches and a lack of minutes during the playoffs. On a team that’s not known for passing such as Golden State, Webber would be again whining before too long.
While it’d be a nice feel good story, Nelson and the Warriors should just say no to adding Webber to their mix.
Webber really hasn’t been the same since back when he was with Tyra Banks.
