Top Five Busts of the 2008 NFL Draft
Wednesday, February 27th, 2008The NFL Draft is a time when commentators talk about how great every incoming college player will be at the pro level. The upside potential is always limitless for each of the prospects at this time of year. But here at Steamy Sports, we just aren’t that nice. We tell the truth – even when it hurts.
And now I present the top five busts of the 2008 NFL Draft:
5) Limas Sweed, Wide Receiver
This University of Texas product was all hype while in college. Whenever the going got tough, Sweed was nowhere to be found. Sure, he had a couple good games here and there but he never truly lived up to his expectations. If a team picks him in the first round of the draft, they will be disappointed.
4) Dan Connor, Linebacker
Dan Connor is the classic case of scouts looking for something that just isn’t there. Connor played linebacker for Penn State and everyone knows Penn State is Linebacker U. However, the problem is Connor can’t play. He was a good college player. On the NFL level, he’s going to be beaten up on a weekly basis.
3) Felix Jones, Running Back
Last season, Felix Jones might have had the easiest job in college football. As the backup to Darren McFadden, Jones played against worn down defenses who were tired of chasing McFadden around the field. Defenses slacked off a bit when Jones came into the game and Jones exploited the relaxed defenses. But in the NFL, defenses don’t relax. And he won’t have the luxury of playing behind the best player at his level.
2) Chris Long, Defensive End
Everybody loves Howie Long. He does a great job on television as a football analyst. Even his commercials are usually entertaining. That said, just because Howie Long is a cool guy doesn’t mean his son is going to turn into a star football player. A lot of mock drafts have Chris Long, Howie’s son, going in the top five picks. That’s just insane. If he wasn’t related to Howie, he’d be a mid-first round pick at best.
1) Brian Brohm, Quarterback
Coming into the 2007 college football season, Brian Brohm was considered a near lock to be the top pick of the 2008 NFL Draft. However, after a rough season, Brohm is now tumbling down the draft charts and is now viewed as a late first rounder. But if playing at Louisville and living up to the hype was too much pressure, imagine what’s going to happen to him in the NFL. This is a guy who sucked against teams like North Carolina State and South Florida because the spotlight was too much for him to bear. Does that sound like a guy you want quarterbacking your NFL team? Didn’t think so.
In honor of Brohm, here’s Louisville cheerleader Rebecca Mann.
